Miami Dolphins’ NFL season 2014

The Miami Dolphins have to be very happy with the running game efforts of Lamar Miller. The Dolphins have to be extremely happy with the pass rushing effort of Cameron Wake. You have to be a little worried about the fact that the Dolphins weren’t able to close out games at home against the Green Bay Packers.

What is the situation with wide receiver Mike Wallace? These unanswered questions may be why the team finished at 8-8. The team truly was able to benefit from the work of defensive back Brent Grimes, kept that fact in mind.

2014 NFL Week 17: Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets on Sunday, December 28, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

The New York Jets signed off their season in style, beating the Miami Dolphins in 37-24 at their backyard. By the end of the second quarter, the Dolphins were on top and looked set to run away with the victory at home. However, the third quarter introduced a different Jets side, a side hungry for a final bite. If only they had been this zealous for victory from the beginning of the season! They rallied like wounded lions from behind to register this famous victory that is unlikely to save coach Rex Ryan from being sacked. Geno Smith tried his best to redeem himself, going for three crucial touchdowns, having set a personal record of 358 yards.

The Jets, 4-12, have had a very rocky season. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Jets are staying out of the playoffs. However, a cloud of uncertainty surrounds coach Ryan’s job. He is widely expected to be replaced. The owner of the Jets, Mr Woody Johnson, is expected to ring changes in the club, relieving both the coach and the manager of their duties. As for the Dolphins, this was their eighth loss of the season, marking an average performance from the side.

2014 NFL Week 16: Miami Dolphins vs Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, December 21, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

The Miami Dolphins came from behind to erase a 14 point deficit to defeat the Minnesota Vikings after having trailed until the dying minutes of the fourth quarter. Earlier in the game, two quick successive scores handed Miami a 7 point lead and gave the Vikings a ninety one percent likelihood of clinching the game.

In response, the Dolphins manufactured an 11 play, 80 yard drive to bring both teams level with a minute and sixteen seconds of play left. The probability of a Viking’s win was bumped up to 40 percent but Minnesota was still projected to concede until a special team’s play changed their fortunes.

With only 41 seconds left, Dolphin’s Terrence Fede blocked a punt for safety thereby handing Miami a tight 37-35 triumph. Fede’s block notwithstanding, the Dolphin’s were still favorites to win with a 77 percent probability with possession of the ball and only in need of a solitary field goal to take the game.

Minnesota, who in similar fashion wasted a two-touchdown cushion in a loss to the Lions in the previous week, failed to hold on to their leads against a formidable Miami side.Lamar Millar’s plunge from a yard’s range on a third down just at the beginning of the fourth quarter put the Minnesota ahead for the first in the entire game and they never looked back.

2014 NFL Week 15: Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots on Sunday, December 14, 1:00 PM, Gillette Stadium

The game between the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins was a blowout. The Patriots scored a record 24 point in the third quarter to take the win 41-13. During the second half, alone, the Dolphins had to watch the Patriots outscore them 27-0. This leaves the Dolphins with only one more chance to make the playoffs. This win gave the Patriots their 6th consecutive AFC East title. They are the first NFL team in history to obtain 11 titles in 12 years. During the game the Patriots were able to sack Ryan Tannehill four times, bait him into two turnovers, and limit the Dolphins to an average of only 3.3 yards per carry.

Jamie Collins blocked a field goal and Kyle Arrington returned it 62 yards for a Patriots touchdown. Brady helped clinch the win by throwing two scoring passes in the third quarter. Brady had an overall total of 21 successful passes out of the 35 he threw. The Patriots were able to score on all four series during the third quarter to gain 24 points, which is a team record. This was a turnaround game from the Patriots’ 33-20 loss to Miami at the beginning of the season.

2014 NFL Week 14: Miami Dolphins vs Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, December 07, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

Miami Dolphins lost 13-28 to their charged guests, the Baltimore Ravens, on Sunday. It took the Ravens seventeen minutes to make the first touch down. They then rallied from behind to overcome a ten point deficit to run away with the important victory. The Ravens made two consecutive touch down drives 97 and 75 yards each. The winning score was added after a reversal replay reversal. The 3rd quarter saw coach John Harbaugh make a gamble that helped. The Raven’s first down on four-and-1 jump-started run that catapulted them into the driver’s seat for the first time in the game.

With both teams in contention for the wild card play-off berth in the AFC, the game was a cracker indeed. However, the Dolphins failed to take home advantage, allowing the Ravens to run over them and secure a vital leap over them in the scramble for the play off’s wild card. The Dolphins have never played in the post season since 2008 and their drifting further from getting their this season. With three games left on the cards, it is becoming more realistic that they are bound to miss the play offs. To revive any hopes of taking part in the play offs, they must beat New England in their backyard in their next game.

2014 NFL Week 13: Miami Dolphins at New York Jets on Monday, December 01, 8:30 PM, MetLife Stadium

Miami traveled to New Jersey to play the Jets in a very important game for the Dolphins. The Jets are struggling to find their franchise quarterback, but they almost beat the Dolphins with their two strengths, rushing and defense.

The NY Jets held the Dolphins to 291 total yards. The Jets defense forced one turnover and sacked Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill twice. The Jets offense was not spectacular, but it did execute its strengths. Running Back Chris Johnson ran for 105 yards. Chris Ivory also ran very well as he ran for sixty-two yards. The Jets were able to limit Geno Smiths mistakes by letting him throw the ball thirteen times. Smith completed seven passes for sixty-five yards and an interception.

The Dolphins running struggled, as the team rushed for only seventy-four yards. Lamar Miller did run for one touchdown. Tannehill threw for 235 yards and one interception. The quarterbacks top target was Mike Wallace, whom caught six passes for sixty-nine yards. The Dolphins star of the game was their kicker. Caleb Sturgis kicked the game winning field goal with under two minutes left in the game.

Baltimore is traveling to Miami, their match up is for playoff positions as both teams have the same record. The Jets are traveling to Minnesota and playing a Vikings team that is coming of powerful victory over Carolina.

2014 NFL Week 12: Miami Dolphins at Denver Broncos on Sunday, November 23, 4:25 PM, Sports Authority Field @ Mile High

The Denver Broncos and the Miami Dolphins were also in another do or die duel. Theirs was also a very closely fought affair. Just like in the Rams vs Chargers match, the victory margin was just three points only, the advantage going the Broncos way. After the first three quarters, it appeared like the Dolphins would subdue the Broncos in their own backyard. However, the pep talk just before the kick off of the last quarter must have turned on the hosts. They came back on the pitch blazing like fire, pressing on all cylinders, giving the Dolphins no chance to execute any meaningful move.

They took the quarter 22-0, overcoming the gritty Dolphins 39-36 after the final whistle. Going by their form, it would have been a surprise for the Broncos to lose this one. They have lost only three games this season, a performance that overshadows the Dolphins 6-5 record this season. The victory is a warning shot to their upcoming opponents. For the Dolphins, this was a bitter loss. However, they have themselves to blame. They rested on their laurels after they took control of the game. They simply gave it away. They will have to dig deep as they struggle to snuff up their seventh win of the season.

2014 NFL Week 11: Miami Dolphins vs Buffalo Bills on Thursday, November 13, 8:25 PM, Sun Life Stadium

The first game of the weekend was between the Buffalo Bills and their hosts, the Miami Dolphins. The visitors were in for a rude shock as their hosts routed them 22-9. The Dolphins took made good use of their home ground advantage. They outplayed the Bills in all departments. With several key injury victims on the sidelines, there was no way the Bills were going to beat the Dolphins.

The first quarter was quite lethargic for the Dolphins. It ended 3-3, followed by a 0-3 score in favor of the guests in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the tide turned against the Bills after the Dolphins piped up both their offense and defense. Their defining moment was when their defense denied the Bills offense entrance to the end zone. The third quarter ended at 10-3, followed by a 10-0 score in the final quarter, both results in favor of the hosts. The results mean the Bills are at 5-5 and the Dolphins at 6-4, average performances by both teams. However, it is the Bills to work hard and regain their shattered confidence and morale ahead of the next game.

2014 NFL Week 10: Miami Dolphins at Detroit Lions on Sunday, November 09, 1:00 PM, Ford Field

The Detroit Lions (7-2, 1st in NFC North) extended their winning streak to four games as they once again came from behind, beating the Miami Dolphins (5-4, 2nd in AFC East) 20-16. The Lions, who had scored late in the fourth quarter to win in their previous two games, scored with 29 seconds left on an 11 yard pass from QB Matthew Stafford to Theo Riddick. Stafford finished with 280 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The interception came on a leaping, one-handed catch by Miami’s CB Brent Grimes as Stafford was targeting Calvin Johnson in the end zone. Johnson, in his first game since October 5th, had 7 receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The Dolphins, who have lost in the final minute twice in the last month, kicked a field goal with 4:19 left in the fourth quarter to take a 16-13 lead. The Dolphins defense, which is the second best passing defense in the league, were unable to stop Stafford and the Lions from marching down the field and scoring the winning touchdown. Miami’s offense struggled to move the ball against the top ranked Lion’s defense. Dolphins’ QB Ryan Tannehill finished with 207 with a touchdown and interception. Miami faces division rival Buffalo next week, as the Lions will battle for NFC supremacy against the Arizona Cardinals.

2014 NFL Week 9: Miami Dolphins vs San Diego Chargers on Sunday, November 02, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

This game had all of the hype that you could expect from two teams that were strong playoff contenders. Miami at 4-3 was on a two game win streak. San Diego had stumbled coming into this contest, losing their last two games. The Dolphins took a twenty point lead in the first half and never looked back. Ryan Tannehill threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with ten different receivers.

The Dolphins defense showed its dominance of the game by sacking Phillip Rivers three times, and caused four turnovers. Rivers passed for 138 yards signalling the struggles that the Chargers had for the entire game. The Chargers run game is the biggest disappointment of the game as they only rushed for fifty yards. The Chargers rookie running back Brandon Oliver had the biggest struggles of the game as he only averaged one-and-a-half yards per carry.

The Chargers get a well deserved bye week because some of their recent challenges are results of injuries. The Dolphins are traveling to Detroit and playing the NFC North division leading Lions.

2014 NFL Week 8: Miami Dolphins at Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, October 26, 1:00 PM, EverBank Field

The fearless Jacksonville Jaguars took on the Miami Dolphins in an early game for the day. Miami’s defense had been holding strong for the season but could the offense show up and play. Jacksonville has been struggling but has managed to keep most games this season close. The scoring would start at the beginning of the second quarter when Miami safety Lois Delmas would return an interception 81-yards for a touchdown. Halfway through the second quarter Jacksonville would convert a 30-yard field goal that would narrow the gap somewhat but still leave it as a one-possession game. With less than a minute to finish the half Miami would convert a 43-yard field goal to make it a 7-point game again.

Starting the third quarter and with both offenses not accomplishing much, Miami’s defense would step up to make the big play. Cornerback Brent Grimes would intercept a pass and return it 22-yards for a touchdown. Jacksonville managed to reply with a field goal before Ryan Tannehill completed a 3-yard pass to Rishard Matthews to score the first offensive touchdown of the game. Jacksonville would make a late rally in the fourth quarter scoring a touchdown but it would be too little and too late as the Dolphins sealed the win 27-13.

2014 NFL Week 7: Miami Dolphins at Chicago Bears on Sunday, October 19, 1:00 PM, Soldier Field

After last week’s heartbreaking loss on the fake spike, Miami set out to try their hand against another NFC North opponent in the Chicago Bears. Miami QB Ryan Tannehill did not waste any time, and he looked completely different compared to last week. He completed his first 14 passes to a Chicago team that looked lost, and finished 25-for-32, 277 yards, and 2 touchdowns, as the Dolphins got back to .500 after defeating Da Bears in Chicago 27-14. Jay Cutler is quickly becoming too much of a gunslinger. He is making poor throws trying to force the ball through traffic, but he is also not making up for it.

He is adopting the same play style as Brett Favre; only issue is he isn’t making up for his interceptions. After there was some controversy over the position in Miami, Ryan Tannehill has played at least good over his last three games. He still has a long way to go, but if a few more things start clicking for him and the Dolphins they could be a contender in the near future. This year, likely not, but this is the NFL, where anything can happen. They still have another game against the Patriots as well against the Bills, who they can never seem to beat no matter how mediocre they are doing.

2014 NFL Week 6: Miami Dolphins vs Green Bay Packers on Sunday, October 12, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

The Green Bay Packers came into week six with two straight victories. They came up against a Miami Dolphins team that has had some key injuries this season, but are still sitting at five hundred. They also had several of those players returning from injury for this game. The Packers have only beaten the Dolphins in Miami for only the second time in the Packers history.

This game is the story of two distinctly different teams. Miami a young team that is still learning to win the close games, and the Packers, a veteran team that knew how to play in the closing minutes of the game. Ryan Tannehille is a good young quarterback that is still learning to play the game but had the lead going into the final minutes of the contest. His inexperience showed as the Dolphins had to punt the ball with two minutes, and a four point lead in the game.

Green Bays experience showed when they drove down the field and scored a touchdown on the final play of the game to win by three points.

The Dolphins are in for another NFC North showdown as they face the Bears in Chicago, and the Packers are facing a struggling Carolina team, in the nice warm confines of LamBeau Field.

2014 NFL Week 4: Miami Dolphins at Oakland Raiders on Sunday, September 28, 1:00 PM, Wembley Stadium

Lamar Miller continues to make progress at the Dolphins starting running back. Ryan Tannehill also worked hard in this game in order to solidify his position as the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, holding off the backup Matt Moore for now. Tannehill was able to take advantage of a secondary that appears to be in disarray, except for veteran cornerback Charles Woodson.

The Raiders face some significant injuries on both sides of the ball, but this really does not justify the fact that Maurice Jones Drew only had one carry in the game. If a team has a young quarterback like Derek Carr or Matt McGloin in the game, a skilled player like Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake is going to feast off an unbalanced offense. T.J. Carrie was able to intercept a pass for the Raiders in order give them a boost, but it really wasn’t enough to counteract the three interceptions collected by the Dolphins.

The Raiders were able to get some solid production from running back Darren McFadden, but reports had the team limiting his workload during the game because of his past history of injuries.

2014 NFL Week 3: Miami Dolphins vs Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, September 21, 4:25 PM, Sun Life Stadium

The game between Kansas City and Miami started off very close and it was scoreless after the first quarter. Kansas City was still looking for its first win of the season, while Miami was 1-1 coming into the game. The Chiefs started fast in the second quarter and went on a 62 yard touchdown drive to take the lead. Miami would add a field goal to make it 7-3. Kansas City then went on a 76 yard drive to go up 14-3 at halftime. Miami would strike first in the second half to make it a 14-10 ballgame.

That did not slow down Kansas City though, as they would go on another long drive to take a 21-10 lead in the third quarter. Miami would make it interesting late in the quarter by scoring a field goal and getting a safety to cut it to 21-15 after three quarters. Then came the fourth quarter and the Chiefs would blow the game open with two more touchdowns to make 34-15. That proved to be the final score as Kansas City got a huge road win in Miami. Kansas City got their first win of the season, while Miami fell to 1-2.

2014 NFL Week 2: Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills on Sunday, September 14, 1:00 PM, Ralph Wilson Stadium

This was the bills day and heeding toe the words of their hall of fame quarterback Jim Kelly who proclaimed “Squish the Fish” the Bills went on to do just that by handing the dolphins a 29-10 loss in a game that was played on September 14th at 1.00PM eastern time. The Bills win was carried on by a fist clash win in Chicago and the expected sale of the franchise to new owners Terry and Kim Pegula.

The stadium was flocked by fans of either side and was in a frenzy all along. The ecstatic mood went on to become more delirium as the Bills water tight defense was significantly dominant and the offense kept diving in for the points. Some of the big hitters of the night include C.J spiller who returned a 102 yards kick off for a touchdown and also made a 47 yard dash from scrimmage to set up another touchdown. Other top performance in this meeting include rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins who caught 8 passes as well as Dan Carpenter that kicked 4 goals from the field to seal a very convincing victory.

2014 NFL Week 1: Miami Dolphins vs New England Patriots on Sunday, September 07, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

The Sun Life Stadium of Miami, at 1:00 PM, witnessed another compelling contest between guests New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. The game finished 33 to 20, a rather shock result given the fact that New England Patriots never lost a NFL opener since nearly eleven years ago, 2003 more precisely. Knowshon Moreno was the man for the big occasion, as the twenty-seven years old running back rushed for 134 yards and one touchdown, having probably the best game of his career. It was a big upset as Dolphins were already in dreamland by the end of the second half, outscoring their opponents with a twenty-three points margin.

Dolphins’ defense particularly impressed with four sacks and a sublime Jerod Mayo fumble recovery, which was quite something. For the Patriots, as a team, it didn’t go so well, but individual-wise, quarterback Tom Brady was fairly the game’s leading top passer with one touchdown pass to tight end Rob Gronkowski. The latter declared that the home team played better, thus why the outcome is logical. New England’s quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo states that it could have been another result on another occasion. “It could have gone better”, he said. Jones and Buchanan sustained ankle injuries, and Brady might be out.
