Baltimore Ravens NFL season 2015 recap

The Ravens finished third in the AFC North with a 5-11 record this year. In their own division, the Ravens were 3-3, but did beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in both matchups. Both games ended with the Ravens winning by three points (week four: 23-30 and week 16: 20-17) The Ravens did not come close to making the playoffs; they were tied with the fifth worst record in the NFL this year, with the San Francisco 49ers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For such a bad team, the Ravens were eighth in the league for average passing yards per game with 266.9. They also finished fourteenth in the league in total offensive yards with an average of 359.3 per game.

Four different quarterbacks (Matt Schaub, Jimmy Clausen, Ryan Mallett, and Joe Flacco) threw at least eighty passes for the Ravens this season. Joe Flacco threw the most passes, 413 and completed 266 of them. He threw for 2,791 yards, fourteen touchdowns, twelve interceptions.

Wide receiver Kamar Aiken had 75 catches, for 944 yards, and five touchdowns; making him the team’s leading receiver. Justin Forsett rushed for 641 yards on 151 carries (average of 4.2), with a long of 33 and scored two touchdowns, he was the team’s leading rusher.

The Ravens also held the Broncos to nineteen points in the first game of the season, a game that they lost.

NFL 2015 Week 17: Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, January 03, 1:00 PM, Paul Brown Stadium

In a clearly familiar scenario, Bengals performance mimicked that of the past. A touchdown pass by A.J. McCarron marked a 24-16 victory for the Bengals against the Ravens. The game led to a third consecutive loss of Ravens, a first in the Franchise’s history. Therefore, with Raven’s season over, they could as well begin focusing and formulating strategies for the next season. Although the Ravens were leading at halftime, they eventually lost to Bengals because of their poor results in the third quarter.

Some football experts have said that Ravens are clearly responsible for their loss. In virtually every game of the season they have led in the second half then lost towards the end. The penalties committed by Ravens were so many that the team could not win against the Bengals. The key takeaway was the four-quarter leads that were blown by the defense. The Bengals had the most injured players compared to other NFL teams. Despite this, the record they attained (12-4) was the best in the franchise’s history. It was evident that the Bengals had been attempting to prepare MacCarron to begin in playoffs. His failure to see open receivers as well as off-target throws proved his inexperience.

NFL 2015 Week 16: Baltimore Ravens vs Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, December 27, 8:30 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens faced off Sunday at 1:00 PM, with the Ravens coming out on top 20-17 at home.

Ryan Mallet shocked the Steelers as he lead the Ravens to victory with a career-high 274 passing yards and a touchdown on just his seventh career start. Justin Tucker knocked in two field goals in the second quarter, and Javorius Allen also tacked on a rushing TD in the fourth quarter to give the home team insurance against the impending comeback by the Steelers.

While the Ravens offense certainly came to play, their defense was not to be overshadowed, picking off Ben Roethlisberger twice. However, DeAngelo Williams was able to find some daylight, eclipsing the century mark for just the fourth time this year, but reaching pay dirt twice.

This was only the fifth win for a Ravens team that was giving the start to it’s fourth quarterback in a six week span. It was also their first win a month. Meanwhile, the Steelers lost for the first time in eleven games. This was the first series sweep for the Ravens in their bitter AFC North rivalry with the Steelers since 2011, when Baltimore went 12-4 losing in the AFC Championship game to the New England Patriots.

NFL 2015 Week 15: Baltimore Ravens vs Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, December 20, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens also lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs scored 34-14 against the Ravens. The chiefs have registered eight straight wins while the Ravens have now lost ten games. The Chiefs’ win is attributed to the balance they had between their offense and defense. The Ravens this season have been unlucky with 18 players being injured. These injuries have forced the team to have numerous turn overs especially in in the quarterback spot. The Ravens have been forced to play most of their games while on the road.

The Ravens were initially confident before the match. The Chiefs’ Marcus Peter intercepted Jimmy Clausen’s touchdown during the second half. Peter managed to make two interceptions during the game. Jimmy Clausen played quarterback in the place of Matt Schaub. Clausen during the first half threw a 281-yard to Kamar Aiken. Kamar went for eight receptions and a touchdown in 128 yards. We cannot fail to recognize Charcandrick West’s contribution towards the Chief’s win. West on 16 carries ran 76 yards and made a touchdown. West filled in for Spencer Ware, who was the injury reserve and he did not disappoint. Alex Smith held the Chiefs’ offense, he completed 21 throws for 171 yards with no interception and a touchdown.

NFL 2015 Week 14: Baltimore Ravens vs Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, December 13, 8:30 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

The lack of running backs in the Seattle Seahawks line up wont alarm them yet again as they cruised past the Baltimore Ravens with a resounding 35 – 6 win. Russell Wilson threw five touchdown passes with three going to Doug Baldwin meaning that the lack of running backs has been covered by Russell’s throws. Baltimore Ravens whose injuries continue to deplete the team of the normal line up meant that they had to surfer another huge and disappointing loss at the hands of the Seahawks. This also meant that Seahawks have now won in four consecutive games.

The five TDs that Russell threw matched his career high and this showed how much of a decider he was in the game. This also gave him a total of 16 in his last four games which is a really great achievement for the player. Thomas Rawls who broke his ankle a wile back and who normally plays as running back had to miss the game because of the injury but no loss there really as the Seahawks proved. It was a great game but with all the injuries that the Ravens had, it was a one way game and there was nothing they could do about it.

NFL 2015 Week 13: Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins on Sunday, December 06, 1:00 PM, Sun Life Stadium

In a game of lowly teams that no one wanted to watch, the Miami Dolphins managed to out last the Baltimore Ravens to get the win on Sunday. It was a miserable game to watch but the Dolphins won to advance to 5-7, while the Ravens drop to 4-8.At one point the Ravens had to warm up Jimmy Clausen. Given the injuries that have ravaged the Ravens team, at this point losing might be the best thing. It will get them a higher draft pick and could set them up to get some needed help.

This game between two middle of the road teams flirting with .500 records may not seem like much to the untrained eye, but it has major play-off implications.

Three things to watch: 1. The Turnover Battl: The last time the Bills won was two weeks ago against Rex Ryan’s former team, the New York Jets, thanks in large part to winning the turnover battle. 2. Banged-Up Bills Defense: The mega contracts of Mario Williams and Marcell Dareus and the addition of Rex Ryan calling the shots may have placed lofty expectations on the Bills’ defense. 3. Resurgent Texans D: Over the past five weeks, J.J. Watt has reminded the football world why he is the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

NFL 2015 Week 12: Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns on Monday, November 30, 8:30 PM, FirstEnergy Stadium

This game was played on Monday night, but it was not a game anyone really looked forward to playing or watching. It features two teams whose seasons are pretty much over at this point, there does not seem to be much reason to even play the game other than simply nothing else better to do. It is too bad that ESPN does not have Flex Scheduling the way NBC does on Sunday Night Football. That being said, the two teams put up sixty points. The Browns continue to confuse people by making Johnny Manziel the third string quarterback and starting Josh McCown instead.

Matt Schaub had twenty completions after 34 attempts throwing for 232 yards and two touchdowns, two interceptions in the win. This is Schaub’s first start for Baltimore this season, in his first season for the Ravens. This was his first start since 2013.

Josh McCown had 21 completions after 38 attempts, throwing for 212 yards and one touchdown pass, no interceptions. He would injure his shoulder and was replaced by Austin Davis, who threw a 42 yard touchdown pass.

Going into halftime, the Browns were down 17-13 after putting up all the points they had scored in the second quarter. In the second half, the Ravens put up another sixteen points to the Browns’s fourteen. This game was all Ravens, all the way.

NFL 2015 Week 11: Baltimore Ravens vs St. Louis Rams on Sunday, November 22, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

The Baltimore Ravens won against the St. Louis Rams by 16 – 13 but this came at the expense of their quarterback Joe Flacco and their running back Justin Forsett who both got injured in the game. Flacco who tore ligaments in his left knee, in the dying seconds of the game but managed to hold on with the offense until the game was over. It would be considered a good victory but the quarterback being injured won’t come much of a celebration for the Ravens. Forsett on the other hand broke both bones in his arm was off in the first quarter and as per the stats, he is The Ravens leading rusher.

Case Keenum was the player who gave the game to the Ravens having fumbled with the ball and Lawrence Guy recovering it with 51 seconds on the clock. Rams RT also left the field in the second quarter with an injury to his knee. The game had a fair share of dramatic moments and this is what led to the Ravens stealing the show. This win comes much needed for the Ravens who have been looking for one for quite some time now and this means that the Rams go into their next game with a loss and need to win, desperately.

NFL 2015 Week 10: Baltimore Ravens vs Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, November 15, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

In what could be regarded as this season’s game changer; the Jaguars put on a skillful mastery as they edged out their fiercely long time opponents the Ravens. Ravens for the better of the game proved to be a threat in an encounter which made the game to be balanced for the better part of time. Things however became different as the Jaguar’s superb defense skills meant that the Ravens could do little in an effort to garner more lifesaving points. The game however has been marred with some controversy with the Ravens coach Harbaugh pointing a finger to officiating error which could have seen them grab a game winning opportunity.

With the huge caliber players that the both teams possess, this however shouldn’t be an excuse given that the game was all open for both sides to grab opportunities for gaining more points and make a final win. Jaguars win over the Ravens has on the other side cemented their superb winning quality which has been on display all this season. If the winning form is to be maintained then it will be no surprise to see the Jacksonville outfits be regarded as this season’s top performers; a fate which they have regularly achieved over the past seasons.

NFL 2015 Week 8: Baltimore Ravens vs San Diego Chargers on Sunday, November 01, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

On Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens found a way to win a close game. During the final play, Justin Tucker kicked a 39-yard field goal overcoming another record-setting performance by Philip Rivers in the 29 – 26 victory on Sunday. The Ravens win came with a price where Steve Smith tore his right Achillies tendon in the third quarter and will not be playing again this season. San Diego has lost on the games final play for the third time this season. The game was competitive which saw both quarterbacks, Joe Flacco, who is the Raves quarterback completed 25 of 37 passes for 319-yards including a touchdown and no interceptions.

Philip Rivers, who is the Chargers quarterback completed 28 of 37 passes for 301-yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Rivers has completed most of his passes this season. San Diego played with a makeshift offensive line without the starting left guard Orlando Franklin who had an ankle injury and the starting left tackle King Dunlap left the ground with an ankle problem too who was replaced by Chris Hairston who also experienced a knee injury but returned to the field.

Chris Watt who is the backup center also sustained a shoulder injury. The Baltimore Ravens and the San Diego Chargers have endured a rather disappointing season.

NFL 2015 Week 7: Baltimore Ravens at Arizona Cardinals on Monday, October 26, 8:30 PM, University of Phoenix Stadium

Despite pulling within eight points late in the fourth quarter when Arizona missed an extra point and had a blocked punt Joe Flacco’s pass was intercepted by Cardinals defensive back Tony Jefferson with only six seconds remaining on the clock resulting in a defeat of 26-18 for the Ravens. The Ravens were really hurt by the nine penalties and two turnovers that contributed to their eight point loss marking their largest defeat in 2015.

The only turnover of their game came at the half, before Jefferson’s interception, and led to a touchdown putting the Cardinals up 14-10, unfortunately Arizona never trailed again. Apparently they were having problems with their communications systems, particularly during the final drive. Coach John Harbaugh said that the phones were going out so Flacco couldn’t hear the offensive coordinator. What ever the cause of the challenges that they faced during the match It looks likely that they are now staring down at a lost season whilst the Cardinals continue to fly higher and higher.

Ironically Baltimore actually won the time-of-possession battle by about a minute and out-gained the Ravens 414 yards to 276. It is hard to imagine the Baltimore Ravens having any chance at the playoffs after this latest defeat at University of Phoenix Stadium.

NFL 2015 Week 6: Baltimore Ravens at San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, October 18, 4:25 PM, Levis Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers ended a four game losing streak on Sunday with their win over the 1-5 Ravens. This game is a rematch of the Super Bowl from three seasons ago that the Ravens won. Phil Dawson kicked four field goals in the win.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco completed 33 passes on 53 attempts for 343 yards and 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. On the last play of the game, the Ravens had a chance to pull ahead, but a desperate pass from Flacco went incomplete, ending their hopes to win their second game.

Colin Kaepernick threw 2 touchdowns, no interceptions on 16 completions and 27 attempts for 340 yards in the win. One of his touchdowns was for 76 yards to Torrey Smith; it put San Francisco up 13-3 early in the second quarter. He also had 3 rushes for 10 yards.

In a battle of two underwhelming and last place teams, the 49ers outlast the Ravens, even after getting outscored 14-9 in the second half.

The Ravens have been losing games, but by a slim 14 points. Even their win against the Steelers was by a field goal. Whereas the 49ers have been outscored by 82 points in their four losses this season. Both teams are showing the different ways that you can lose games, either by close margins or by being blown out.

NFL 2015 Week 5: Baltimore Ravens vs Cleveland Browns on Sunday, October 11, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

Cleveland Browns quarterback wrote his name in the record book with another great performance helping his team to a victory in Baltimore. He became to first Browns quarterback to throw more than 300 yards in 3 consecutive games and also broke the passing record set in 1981 by Brain Sipe at 444 yards with a franchise high 457 yards. The game went into overtime and was won with a Travis Coons kick that secured a 32 yard field goal and a 33 to 30 win for the Browns. The Browns had previously lost 13 out of their last 14 meetings with the Ravens.

The Ravens continued a horrible run and have now lost their first 3 games of the season at home. They are 1-4 which is one of their worst starts ever and played a game out to overtime for the second time in a row. Joe Flacco ran two touchdowns both 1 yard away from the zone. They were up 27-22 but could not make any big moves in the last quarter which has been their problem all season. A foul turned the ball over to the Browns and they never looked back as they took the game into overtime and secured a win.

NFL 2015 Week 4: Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, October 01, 8:25 PM, Heinz Field

So finally the Baltimore Ravens are able to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the ugly game of Thursday Night Football. Ravens stood victorious in this Ravens at Steelers battle. Pittsburg Kicker Josh Scoobe simply missed out chances of icing the game in the last quarter. It was the mistake of Scoobe which offered Baltimore life and helped avoiding 0-4 hole. But then Pittsburg defense has been maligned all through the season and it shut down the passing game while sacking Joe Flacco in 5 occasions. It was great to see Justin Tucker making a 52 yard goal while consuming 5.08 overtimes to offer Baltimore Ravens 23-20 victory.

Tucker managed to tie within 3 seconds after Pittsburg had missed the pair of kicks which would otherwise be five in number, the Steelers a bit of caution. Tucker won it in the extra period just after Steeler failed to convert the pair of fourth downs.

Justin Forsett managed to run 150 yards for the Ravens and Flacco threw the touchdown pass. Michael Vick threw in for 120 yards and the score just started in the place of injured Ben Roethlisberger. At 1-3, Ravens attained a new life and Pittsburg at 2-2. So, Justin Forsett won the game and that was terrific.

NFL 2015 Week 3: Baltimore Ravens vs Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, September 27, 1:00 PM, M&T Bank Stadium

A late drive, that was capped by a seven yard touchdown pass from Andy Dalton to A.J. Green won the game for the Bengals, and finished off the comeback. Up until then, they had been letting what was a fourteen point lead that they had entering the third quarter, turn into two different three point deficits.

The Ravens may have lost this game, but they still put up all 24 points they scored in the second half, against 14 points of the Bengals.

Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton completed 20 passes on 32 attempts, throwing for 383 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. Ten of his completions went to receiver A.J. Green, who had 227 yards and caught two touchdowns. He also lost a fumble.

Joe Flacco completed 32 passes on 49 attempts, throwing for 362 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. His favorite target was to Steve Smith Sr. who caught 13 passes for 186 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

A lot of the Ravens’ problem this season is they do not run the ball well, their defense isn’t very good, and they commit too many penalties. They have also had fourth quarter leads in each game so far, and they have blown all three of them.

NFL 2015 Week 2: Baltimore Ravens at Oakland Raiders on Sunday, September 20, 4:05 PM, O.co Coliseum

Ravens, which opened up the season on a high struggled badly in the face of the Raiders on Sunday. The Raiders were surprisingly quite remarkable in this game having come from a defeat at the hands of the Ravens next opponents, the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a game with its own highs as well lows but generally it was a good game despite the Ravens lackluster performance.

The Carr actually threw for yards totaling 351 and 3 touchdowns with a whole 6 passes that were longer than the 20 yards of the Ravens secondary. This performance was just what the Raiders needed in their quest to ensure that this game was theirs.

Oakland actually did convert 9 third downs in fourteen tries that were all through the air and this made the game pretty interesting on some part. Almost every member of the secondary was actually called for either pass interference or holding the ball at most points in the game that was really a dismal performance. Lewis and Smith missing two tackles each.

Overall, the game was interesting despite it not having seen the best from both teams as far as performance is concerned and the victors really deserved the win without a doubt. Congratulations to the Raiders.

NFL 2015 Week 1: Baltimore Ravens at Denver Broncos on Sunday, September 13, 4:25 PM, Sports Authority Field at Mile High

The Baltimore Ravens started their new season with a 13-19 loss to Denver Broncos in a game that saw a high scrutiny in both team offences. Denver Broncos started the game on a high note by hammering the Ravens 6-0 in the first quarter. The Ravens on the other hand made a positive reply with a 3-3 draw in the second quarter and a promising 10-7 win in the third quarter. The Ravens however suffered their second defeat in the fourth quarter by 3 points.

Former Denver playmaker Darian Stewart was the tormenting factor to the Ravens. He snatched the ball from Crockett Gilmore with only 28 seconds left to seal a 19-13 win over his former team. Baltimore recorded a single touchdown in the entire game thanks to an effort by cornerback Jimmy Smith who ran for 24 yards. Broncos replied through Aqib Talib who made a 51 yard interception to put the Broncos in the lead at 16-13.

The Ravens will be hoping to make a tricky comeback when they visit the Oakland Raiders who suffered a 33-13 hammering at the hands of Cincinnati Bengals. On the other hand, the Broncos will be hoping to keep their unbeaten run when they visit Kansas City who also recorded a win over the Houston Texans.
